Artist Profile:

Nany

“My pen name is Nany and I am an aspiring pencil portrait artist.

I have always been amazed by artistic painting and drawing. During my early years in Colombia, I exhibited interest in drawing and drew a few cartoons but never applied myself to it. Later, while in University, I adventured to draw someone of authority and unfortunately got discouraged as this person disliked the fact that I drew her. I stopped drawing until 2020, when in the middle of lockdowns, I grabbed a pencil and a piece of paper and started drawing again. The reaction of those around me was priceless! I have self-taught since then.

Pencil portraits give me the opportunity to experience love and kindness in a way that is hard to describe. It has given me a deeper reflection about human beings: what’s behind the eyes, every line of their smile, their story. I am still in the learning process and my goal is to reach a realistic level in which I am able to capture the noble essence of those I draw. Pencil portraits are my gift to those around me. They are not about me but my love for people. Juli, Analu and Montse are three of my nieces. They represent innocence, hope, love, and light. I loved every single line and every single shade I made to attempt to put in paper their beauty. These portraits were made with love and I feel it was my heart drawing instead of my hands. After all “it’s only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye” (The Little Prince)”.
