Artist Profile:
O.K. Losier
O.K. Losier is an emerging St. Catharines-based creative currently studying to be a visual arts teacher at Brock University. Their work has been displayed in the Brock VISA gallery, the St. Catherines Art Association and in the Brooklyn art library. They work in many different forms of media, including acrylic paint, clay, and oil pastel. Visually, their work is playful and cartoonish, sometimes inspired by retro graphic design. To play along with this, many of their themes exaggerate the charming strangeness of life, and they occasionally seek to celebrate queer identities. No matter what though, it’s always through vibrant colours and characters. While they sometimes explore deeper themes, Losier always wants to spark a sense of wonder for the world in the viewer, and let them connect to their inner child.
Statement
For this piece, I’ve reflected on how humanity has changed the environment to the extent that we consider the existence of creatures attempting to live in this habitat to be “pests”. So, with this garbage can, I want to remind the viewer that even though we are in an urban environment, we still share this ecosystem, and keeping the streets clean is an easy form of respect.
